ISLAMABAD (Big Digit) The reduction in electricity prices is a big relief in inflation. Inflation in the country remained below the estimates of the Ministry of Finance for the second consecutive month, with the annual inflation rate further decreasing to 0.96 percent in March. The Bureau of Statistics released a monthly report on inflation. The annual inflation rate was recorded at 1.52 percent in February 2025. The average inflation rate from July to March was 5.25 percent. The inflation rate in March increased by 0.89 percent compared to February. According to the Bureau of Statistics, inflation in cities increased by 0.78 percent in March, while the inflation rate in villages increased by 1.05 percent last month. In March, the inflation rate in cities was 1.16 percent, while the inflation rate in villages was recorded at 0.02 percent. Brokerage firm Topline Securities said that the annual inflation rate in March 2025 has come down to 0.7 percent, which is the lowest level in three decades. After the Prime Minister’s announcement of a reduction in electricity prices, details of the new rate per unit of electricity have come to light.

Traders and industrialists welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of a reduction in electricity prices and said that they were not expecting such a big relief. Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Atif Ikram Sheikh has said that they are grateful to the government for the reduction in electricity prices, which will provide relief to the business community. During a press conference with other FPCCI officials in Islamabad, Atif Ikram Sheikh said that today’s relief is for domestic consumers as well as industry and commercial. He said that FPCCI fought a 10-month battle, I congratulate the business community on the reduction in electricity bills, the country is moving in a good direction, positive steps will reduce the burden on the common man and industries. Renowned business leader and Patron-in-Chief of United Business Group (UBG) SM Tanveer said that I thank Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Army Chief General Asim Munir, the task force, SIFC and the entire business community. Congratulating the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) leadership, SM Tanveer said that all stakeholders including the government stood by us at our voice and we proved that the thefts that were happening in IPPs or wrong agreements should be corrected. He said that there has been relief in electricity prices of Rs. 7.50, this is not only for the industry but also for the residential consumers of the whole of Pakistan, while this will provide relief to the business community. Along with this, the Prime Minister has made an important point that there was a leakage of 3.5 thousand billion rupees which the government has stopped, in fact it is not 3.5 thousand but one trillion rupees. The Prime Minister has said that more work is being done on this, the work that has been done, the number of IPP contracts that have been canceled and the impact of this has been conveyed to the people, God willing, the impact of the one trillion we are talking about will also reach the people. On the other hand, Chairman Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association Sheikh Umar Rehan has termed the reduction of 7 rupees 59 paise in the unit of electricity by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as welcome for the industries. He said that the reduction in electricity rates will increase exports. Meanwhile, President All Pakistan Anjuman Tajran Ajmal Baloch has reacted and said that he welcomes the announcement of reduction in electricity prices, however, due to the rescheduling of contracts, the prices should have been reduced more. Ajmal Baloch said that despite the government announcement, electricity thieves are not caught, electricity theft worth 600 billion is a matter of concern. He said that free electricity worth 700 billion is being used, the chapter of free electricity, free petrol and free gas should be closed. It should be noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction in prices for domestic electricity consumers. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has issued a notification for the reduction in electricity prices in the form of quarterly adjustment. The notification states that the reduction in electricity prices has been made in the form of quarterly adjustment for October to December 2024, which will be applicable to all discus consumers including K-Electric. According to the notification, the reduction in electricity prices will be applicable for 3 months from April to June 2025, with this reduction providing electricity consumers with a relief of Rs 56.38 billion. According to Nepra, the reduction in electricity prices will not be applicable to lifeline and prepaid consumers. The electricity distribution companies had requested to make electricity cheaper in the quarterly adjustment. Nepra had heard the request for quarterly adjustment in February. Meanwhile, the electricity price has also been reduced in the monthly adjustment for the entire country. A separate notification issued by Nepra said that the price of electricity for Karachi consumers has been reduced by Rs 3.2 per unit.According to the notification, electricity has become cheaper by 46 paisa per unit for the rest of the country except Karachi. Nepra has issued separate notifications for the reduction in the price of electricity in the monthly adjustment, according to which electricity consumers will get relief from the reduction in the bills of April.

The notification states that electricity for K-Electric was made cheaper in the monthly adjustment of January 2025, while for the rest of the country, the price of electricity was reduced in the adjustment of February 2025. It should be noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction in electricity prices for domestic consumers by Rs 7.41 per unit, after which the electricity price per unit for all domestic consumers became Rs 38.37 per unit, and similarly, a reduction of Rs 7.59 per unit was announced for industrial consumers, after which the electricity price per unit for industrial consumers became Rs 40.60. After Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the reduction in electricity prices, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said in his post on the social networking website ‘X’ that ‘we welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of reducing electricity prices’. He further said that the government that was not ready to talk to the IPPs not only revised the agreements but also announced a reduction in prices per unit, and will take the ‘Give the people their rights’ movement forward. It should be noted that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif today announced a reduction in electricity prices for domestic consumers by Rs 7.41 per unit, after which the electricity price for all domestic consumers has decreased to Rs 38.37 per unit. Similarly, Shahbaz Sharif announced a reduction of Rs 7.59 per unit for industrial consumers, after which the electricity price for industrial consumers has become Rs 40.60 per unit. Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari says that the bill for the month of May will come with a reduction in price. The rate for commercial consumers was Rs 71 in June, now it will be Rs 62.47, the rate for commercial consumers has decreased by 12 percent. Owais Leghari said that privatization of discos is taking place, the electricity prices in the bills of two crore consumers have decreased by about 48 to 56 percent, this is a huge reduction for the middle class. The tariff for protected domestic consumers using one to 100 units per month will be reduced by Rs 6.14 to Rs 8.52. The tariff for protected domestic consumers with 101 to 200 units per month will be reduced by Rs 6.14 to Rs 11.51, while the tariff for non-protected consumers using 300 units per month will be reduced by Rs 7.24 to Rs 34.3. Similarly, the tariff for non-protected consumers using more than 300 units of electricity will be reduced by Rs 7.24 to Rs 48.46. The tariff for commercial consumers will be reduced by Rs 8.58 to Rs 62.47 per unit, while the tariff for agricultural consumers will be reduced by Rs 7.18 to Rs 34.58. The tariff for industrial consumers will be reduced by Rs 7.69 to Rs 40.51 per unit, while the average electricity tariff will be reduced by Rs 7.41 to Rs 37.64. It should be noted that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has announced a reduction in electricity prices for domestic consumers by Rs 7.41 per unit. The Speaker of the National Assembly has welcomed the major reduction in electricity prices by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. In a statement issued by the Directorate General of Media of the National Assembly Secretariat, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that this is a historic public decision of the Prime Minister and his team. This decision will benefit all consumers without discrimination. After pulling the country out of the economic whirlpool, such a big relief to the people is a historic step. Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq further said that the Prime Minister’s decision will further accelerate economic activities in the country.
