When people talk about progress, the talk often revolves around the economy, energy, and international relations. However, there is a more profound but quieter change taking place. This change is digital. The growing cross-border e-commerce and the extension of the Digital Silk Road within the framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative provide Pakistan with the unique chance to redefine its place in the world, not just as a trading ally, but as a provider of ideas and culture.

The Digital Silk Road is the technological and digital component of the Belt and Road Initiative. It focuses on digital infrastructure, e-commerce, intelligent logistics, cloud computing, and the digital economy. For Pakistan, this particular framework goes beyond the economic parameters. It opens new digital avenues for Pakistani digital creators, especially artists, designers, craftspeople, and creative entrepreneurs to reach new markets, especially China, the largest e-commerce market in the world.

Pakistan has a legacy of creativity. Its rustic skills and craftsmanship of miniature paintings and calligraphy, textiles, and ceramics, and decorative truck art, goes back centuries. The country also has a rich history of contemporary visual art. However, at the global level, this wealth of creativity still goes untapped. Many of the designers and artisans still only depend on regional showcases, intermediaries, or restricted trade. The Digital Silk Road and cross border e-commerce has the capability of removing these constraints by enabling bypassing middlemen and enabling artisans and creators to sell directly to global audiences.

China provides the finest example of a digital market. Consumers seek ethno-cultural unique, hand-made and sustainable crafted items which are visible on Alibaba, Taobao, Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin. There is a growing interest among Chinese consumers in international crafts, originals, and textiles as well as designs inspired by heritage. There is a demand in China for creative products from Pakistan, which is a perfect fit. Accessibility is determined by digital readiness, visibility, and institutional support.

Selling products online is more than just a business. Every item sold online has meaning and history. Every item is a hand woven from the Gilgit region, a small painting from Lahore, and a ceramic piece from Multan. Each introduces and educates the world about the depth of Pakistan’s rich culture. This online marketing is digital soft diplomacy selling products and educating the world about the beauty, history, and techniques of the country.

Pakistan has the most youthful demographics in the region in large part due to over 60% of the population being under the age of 30. This is coupled with a generation that is tech-savvy and socially entrepreneurial. A great number of young creators utilize social media to promote and disseminate their crafts; however, an economic return from their portfolios is still a challenge. The Digital Silk Road has the potential to facilitate remote fabrication and participation in global value chains, giving young creators the ability to earn their craft and income while maintaining visibility in the global marketplace.

For an artist, the Digital Silk Road opens an entirely new conceptual space for an artist’s gallery—one without walls, and without borders. Artists no longer have to wait for physical easel invitations, as custom narratives and audience engagement. For women artisans, especially those in rural areas, the digital access to integration across value chain activities and marketplaces is transformative in preserving the traditional skills and generational handcrafted knowledge, as well as offering financial autonomy Aus.

Despite these development opportunities, Pakistan experiences considerable challenges. Unrestricted international transactions are caused by underdeveloped digitized payment systems. Expensive shipping and poor logistics deter small sellers. Many of the artisans are untrained in digital marketing, branding, and effective product presentation. There are also no digital marketing platforms specifically for the trade of cultural and creative products. Pakistan will continue to be an absent player in the digitalized economy without the right policies.

Targeted action is needed to close these gaps. Pakistan needs to fully appreciate the significance of creative industries as an economic sector and not as an auxiliary endeavor. Pakistan and China can establish a digital creative marketplace with bilingual product listings and tiered logistics. Pakistani and Chinese citizens will be able to access the marketplace more conveniently. Digital entrepreneurship should be embedded in the curricula of universities and arts institutions. Export regulations affecting the creative sector in handmade and artistic products need to be streamlined. Support for women-led businesses in this sector should be prioritized.

There is further supportive evidence globally. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the worldwide creative economy is over $1 trillion and is growing quickly due to digital trade. The World Bank stated that small producers are able to access the global marketplace through e-commerce which is a means of alleviating poverty and the disparity of inequalities. The Asian Development Bank also noted that digital trade helps economically empower women and youth. All of this corresponds to the socio-economic situation of Pakistan.

As far back as the Silk Road, Pakistan and China have had cultural exchanges. These educational and artistic exchanges, along with the New Silk Road, have continued the tradition. There are opportunities for digital art residencies, virtual exhibitions, and collaborative artistic projects. These are tools for creating virtual cultural spaces. These cultural spaces, however, are not a substitute for places and bridges. People are not politically imprisoned.

Looking out, the most valuable trade is in the imagination, and the cultures to which it belongs. The innovative artists, writers, and designers of Pakistan have the imagination, and with the backing of digital technology and infrastructure, they have the potential to not only trade, but to create markets that will define the future.

Pakistan has the opportunity to redefine its global presence through the Digital Silk Road. It breaks through traditional models of exports as Pakistan now has the opportunity to engage within the realm of culture, creativity, and technology. By empowering and investing in the artistic, creative and entrepreneurial talent in the country, Pakistan will be able to build a digital economy that is more inclusive and sustainable, while enhancing and projecting its cultural image across the globe.

Pakistan’s creative voice is part of the contemporary global landscape, and it deserves to be amplified. The Digital Silk Road is more than a channel of commercial and digital transactions. It is a channel of ideas, connections, and heritage. Fully embracing the Digital Silk Road is the start of a new chapter where Pakistan’s creativity will serve as an asset.

Written By: Ms. Iram Shaheen, a Participant of ICSF-UoS Fellowship Program 2025-26 at University of Sargodha Pakistan is currently at a significant point in terms of its culture, trade, and integration.
