China being a digital innovator has experienced an impressive growth in digital trade in the last ten years. The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology believes that the digital economy of China expanded by USD 4.1 trillion amid 2016 to 2022 and the mean growth rate is 14.2 percent yearly. This development has enhanced the domestic economy of China and brought considerable advantage to states participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), in particular, to the Digital Silk Road (DSR). Pakistan being one of the central partners in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) stands at the epicentre of this emerging digital partnership.

The Digital Silk Road is meant to enhance digital infrastructure, e-commerce across the borders, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and smart logistics. In the case of Pakistan, this initiative offers an opportunity to enter the global trade connections, digitalize its infrastructure, and promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country with the help of technology.

History Background: The Digital Rise of China and the Competition on the Global Stage.

China was not overnight a digital juggernaut. It has been making discreet investments in information and communication technologies (ICT), digital infrastructure and innovation-led development, since the beginning of 2000s. Although western countries were the first to control the digital platforms, China followed the state-supported approach that prioritises national innovation, massive digital infrastructure, and technology-driven industrial transformation.

The 2008 world economic crisis accelerated the digitalization of China even more due to the need to sustain the economy and reduce dependence on the traditional manufacturing industry. The firms such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei transformed e-commerce, online payments, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.

In 2015, the introduction of the Digital Silk Road was a strategic expansion of the Chinese digital capabilities, which is aimed at connecting countries being partners, using digital infrastructure, e-commerce, smart logistics, and technology exchanges. This initiative is quite beneficial to Pakistan as a strategic partner in CPEC.

Pakistan and The Digital Silk Road

Digital Silk Road is a very important aspect of the Belt and Road Initiative and it is focused on digital connectivity, e-commerce across borders, smart cities, and technological integration. As of November 2022, 16 countries including Pakistan had signed Digital Silk Road cooperation agreements and Silk Road e-commerce partnership agreements with China.

In the case of Pakistan, the DSR is very similar to the goals of CPEC, which will aim to modernise infrastructure, make trade more efficient, and support economic growth. Electronic partnership between Pakistan and China has introduced new routes of trade making Pakistani companies reach out to Chinese led digital platforms and e-commerce networks.

Place of Chinese Technology companies and EZTRADER

Chinese technological companies have been critical in transforming Digital Silk road objectives into reality. Lin Jianming, Chairman and the CEO of Samoyed Cloud Technology emphasised the need to deploy artificial intelligence, big data, mobile internet, and cloud computing to help Pakistan achieve its digital strategy. To provide online trade services to Pakistani retailers that import Chinese goods, the company introduced its online store EZTRADER.

EZTRADER is an enterprise that links SMEs on a B2B platform offering an all-around service delivery in procurement, sales, and payment systems. Compared to the original expectations, the platform has already received more than 3,000 original retailers who sell 3C digital products, home appliances, stationery, accessories, and beauty products since its introduction in May.

One more successful storey is one of Aziz-ur-Rehman and Sadia Aziz, who have begun a baby clothes brand in 2018 with limited resources. After receiving Alibaba.com support and training, their company shifted their business to loss-making to earning more than 3 million rupees in revenues, which is a transformative influence of cross-border online trading.

Large E-Commerce Centres and Online Trade Centres

Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai are some of the key centres that support the success of e-commerce in China. Hangzhou, the location where Alibaba is headquartered, is the e-commerce hub in the world, featuring well-developed logistics systems, AI-based systems, and effective platforms of digital payments.

There are new centres in Pakistan like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi that are slowly linking with digital ecosystems led by China. The enhancement of the mobile internet connectivity, digital literacy, and logistics facilities is making these cities active hubs of cross-border digital trade.

Artificial Intelligence Chips and Technological Structure

AI chip is also important in enhancing e-commerce and intercountry trade in Pakistan and China. Such tech processors accelerate machine learning, deep learning, and data analysis, which are required in the recommendation systems, intelligent logistics and safe payment processing.

Traditionally, the US was the leader in the production of AI chips with such firms as Nvidia and AMD. Export restrictions however made China develop local substitutes. The companies such as Huawei, Cambricon and T-Head of Alibaba have generated processors that improve cloud computing, analytics and e-commerce activities. Such AI chips are used in platforms such as Alibaba.com and Daraz in order to manage data, logistics, and transactions. The effects of AI infrastructure on the Digital Silk Road on Pakistani SMEs include enhancing efficiency and reducing costs and access to digital trade led by China, which makes the technology instrumental in enabling companies to enter the digital divide.

Advantages of Digital Silk Road – Driven E-Commerce

There are a number of economic and social advantages of the Digital Silk Road to Pakistan:

1) SME Empowerment: Reduced barriers of entry into the small businesses enable access to the global markets.

2)Reduction of Cost: Direct trade with the Chinese manufacturers eliminates agents.

3)Technological Transfer: AI and cloud computing and big data enhance efficiency and innovation.

4)Employment Generation: New jobs are generated in the areas of logistics, fintech and digital services.

5) Import Diversification: Pakistani companies have the potential to go beyond the conventional markets.

6) Inclusive Growth: It helps women entrepreneurs and rural businesses to engage in digital trade.

Challenges and Constraints

Even though, it has potential, Pakistan-China digital trade has several challenges:

Digital Infrastructure Gaps: There is still lack of Internet connectivity and logistics.

Regulatory and Policy Problems: Harmonisation of e-commerce regulations, taxation and customs procedures is needed.

Skills Shortfall: It has low technical skills that impede the SME.

Cybersecurity Risks: Data breaches and fraud is an issue that arises when engaging in cross-border digital trade.

Financial Inclusion Barriers: There is a low access to digital payment in some businesses.

Market Competition: It is possible that the local products will do poorly competing with the imported Chinese goods.

Opportunities and Future Prospects

The prospects of the Pakistan -China e-commerce collaboration are bright.

Policy Support: Participation can be boosted through investment in ICT infrastructure and digital literacy, as well as training of the SMEs.

Technological Progress: AI, blockchain, predictive analytics, and intelligent logistics can enhance effectiveness.

Cross-Border Payments: The development of digital payment systems will reduce transactions.

Regional Integration: Pakistan can be a centre of regional B2B e-commerce on the BRI.

Entrepreneurship and Job Creation Digital platforms provide more opportunities to startups, young people and women-owned enterprises.

The youthful population, strategic location and growing access to mobile internet is a solid foundation on which digital transformation can be realised in Pakistan. Greater collaboration within the framework of CPEC, along with transfers of technology and policy changes, would allow Pakistan to use the Digital Silk Road to its full capacity

Modern developments in the digital trade cooperation

Platform governance, data flows and technology-driven resilience are becoming dominant in the digital trade in the contemporary global environment. The COVID-19 related supply chain disruptions revealed the significance of digital platforms, smart logistics and real-time data analysis in facilitating the cross-border trade. This change can be exemplified by the digital collaboration between Pakistan and China in the Digital Silk Road. The e-commerce platforms have now added artificial intelligence, internet-based payments, and cloud services to control the risk of trade and market volatility. The expansion of digital entrepreneurship, exports through freelance, and platform-based SMEs in Pakistan are also similar to the path of platform-based growth in China. With the global trading community moving towards no paper-based customs, computerised compliance, and AI-based decision making, Pakistan association with the digital ecosystems led by China, places it in a position to remain abreast with the emerging form of trading. It is a revolution that highlights the strategic value of the Digital Silk Road as a trade program, but as the basis of long-term digital economic resilience and competitiveness.

Conclusion

The digital silk road is a revolutionary model of enhancing e-commerce in Pakistan and China. This partnership has transformed cross-border trade by leveraging the digital expertise of china, state-of-the-art AI chips, and cloud computing infrastructure together with the market potential of Pakistan, which enables SMEs and enables the economic integration process.

Although the obstacles, such as infrastructure fragmentation, regulatory obstacles, and cybersecurity threats still exist, strategic collaboration, innovation technologies, and inclusive digital policies can guarantee that Digital Silk Road is the booster of mutual prosperity and sustainable development. The use of AI-enabled platforms and digital infrastructure is increasing BRI connectivity, and inclusive economic growth and local integration within South Asia through the support of cross-border e-commerce.

Written By: Ms. Aymen Fareed, a Participant of ICSF-UoS Fellowship Program 2025-26 at University of Sargodha Introduction The fast development of the digital economy has altered the trade patterns worldwide and the interaction between countries on economic grounds.
